Usage of File

Use of Files

A workpiece is shown together with the operational stages and the types of files used.

Saw files

When sharpening a saw, use the longest files availble for smooth & effective filing.

In selecting a file for sharpening a saw, it is important to understand the pitch of the saw, usually mentioned in the number of total teeth per inch.

Right way to use the Saw Files

Chain Saw Forestry Files
These are manufactured with various diameters to suit every chainsaw.

Gulleting Saw Forestry File

Bow saw Blade Forestry Files
These are thinner so that it is convenient to file the teeth of bow saw blade without damaging the adjoining tooth. The square edges are useful for filing the gullets.

Cross Cut Forestry File

Precautions in use

Ensure that files are selected according to the requirements in applications for following:

  • Geometry / Shape
  • Hardness
  • Cut

Viz. Saw files

  • Size Triangular / Round Chainsaw
  • See file selection chart for guidance.

Do not subject / expose the files to high temperature. This may reduce the hardness of the teeth (Tempering effect).

Do not do abusive grinding of files to modify the shape for the reasons related to grinding heat. When required, ask your supplier for Custom Built Files.

Follow safe practices:

  • Use a handle
  • Anchor the workpiece
  • Ensure workpiece characteristics - Hardness shall be lower than the files.
  • Wear safety glasses, gloves etc.
